I am a 3rd year medical student living in Center City with a love for children and a strong work history. I am currently on leave until June 2016 to retake my boards, so my schedule is flexible. I began babysitting as a teen. I then spent the rest of high school and all of college working as a restaurant server. I have professional teaching experience as a college tutor and teaching assistant, in addition to volunteer experiences. I have 8 cousins under 7 years old and an infant nephew, so I'm with kids often. One if my recent child-care experiences has shaped my love for, understanding of, and approach to care for children significantly. I volunteer as a tutor/mentor for innercity children at a public library/daycare in Camden (where my med school is located). Over 2 years with this afterschool program, I have developed the skills to teach kids Read more of all ages in all subjects, as well as to manage a large group of energetic children at once. Our group received training in literacy development to improve the poor reading skills/levels in Camden. Some of our children have behavioral issues, cognitive impairment, serious medical conditions, or developmental delay. I am sensitive to these conditions, have experience working with them, and understand them from both an emotional and medical standpoint given my background. I aspire to be a family physician so that I can work with both children and adults. As a physician-in-training and a responsible adult, I am equipped to handle many urgent situations, including medical emergencies, safety concerns, and any accident or uh-oh a kid can come up with. I believe in treating children with respect and maturity in order to develop a trusting relationship and encourage responsibility. It yields mutual respect and thus minimizes the need for discipline, while also bringing us closer together as pals. I am playful and have fun with the kids for whom I care, and they seem to be fond of me, as well. I enjoy arts & crafts and I love coaxing a child's creativity and self-expression. I like exposing them to arts, culture, books, sports, diversity, and nature. I value imagination, self-esteem, and respect for others. I am patient, witty, and down-to-earth. I'm active and able, so keeping up isn't a problem. Other assets: I am certified in basic life support; I love to cook and do it well; I am a planner and organizer; I speak Spanish.
