My wife and I belonged to two babysitting co-operatives, one with over 40 families, and the other with 20 families. So in addition to raising our son and daughter, we both sat for other families' children from infants through 13 years of age. Members traded sitting, and a secretary kept track of the points you earned or spent for babysitting. I did most of the sitting, and found that I enjoyed children of all ages, but especially 1-3 years because they will laugh at the same silly faces over and over again. Now we have a two-month old grandson and I am assisting in his care. Newborns are so sweet! I have lots of stories and songs, games and tricks, for keeping children happy. I am good at putting kids to bed in a gentle way, and always ask the parents for guidance, and give feedback when the parents return. Read more I am lively and active, and can play chase, tag, hide-and-seek, as well as go for walks in the park. I am not a sitter who wants to just sit on the couch and watch TV while the kids run around. I find that the absolute best way to get cooperation from a child is to pay good attention to them, and be fun to spend time with. I don't believe in spanking or punishment, and seek instead to build a mutually cooperative relationship. My daughter took this into her role as a pre-school teacher and had wonderful success in creating a fun but orderly classroom. I am adept at cooking, laundry, light cleaning, dishes, and diaper-changing. I would not want to work with a family that is wildly inconsistent with their children. I take the "yes is yes" and "no is no" approach to keeping behavior within acceptable boundaries. But whenever I sit, I ask for guidance about routines, bedtime, snacks, watching or not watching TV, and try to follow closely what the parents are trying to accomplish in their child-rearing. I am retired from a career in fundraising for Penn and other non-profit organizations. My wife and I are Quakers.
