Hello I'm Nadia Hernandez. I graduated from Southwestern Adventist University with a B.S. in Psychology Emphasis in School Guidance. Working with kids is a tremendous passion of mine. While attending college I participated in a big sister program called "Model Me" mentoring girls (ages 8-12) from lower income families. I was fortunate enough to form close relationship with each one of the girls, encouraging positive self esteem. After college, I volunteered a year working at Hawaiian Mission Academy, a school in Honolulu, Oahu. I was as an assistant dean and scholastic assistant. Responsibilities varied from taking students on a hike, beach days, homework, or advice and support during emotional crisis. I was also specifically hired to tutor students in high school geometry and homework during study halls. After my year in Hawaii, I was immediately hired to work for Mountain View Academy, a private school in Mountain View, California, as Read more the Bible Worker. I taught an introductory religion class to exchange students. I assisted in field trips as a chaperone, making sure students were safe and supervised at all times. I returned to Hawaii and began working as an English Teacher at Hawaii Palms English School. Students, ages 5-17, were from Japan and China. English was taught during various field trips, exposing them to American and Hawaiian Culture. In addition I was employed for Island Sitters, as a Child Caretaker, working with kids ages 6 months to 8 years. Duties included; picking children up from school, driving them to swimming and soccer practice, preparing meals, feeding babies, assisting with homework, encouraging outdoor play, and communicating with parents on child's behavior and momental development. Following this, I joined Honolulu Community Action Program working for the Head Start program. I was the assistant teacher for the spring semester. Responsibilities included enforcing rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order. I look forward to working with families from different backgrounds. I especially love taking kids on outdoor activities and engaging in dramatic play. This is where I feel bonds are created and relationships are formed. I think the outdoors is a great place for children to discover more about themselves and gain confidence in everyday situations. Working with kids is my passion and I stive to make every child feel comfortable and safe. Look forward to working with you and your family.
