My latest job was with 1 1/2-2 year olds for 1 1/2 years. Before that I was a nanny/family manager for 2 years. I'm passionate about combining mainstream and Montessori learning (simple things such as picking up your own trash, picking up your toys before you play with the next thing, cleaning your dishes, etc). My focus is on building independence, self-confidence, and life skills in each child I work with, no matter what age they are! My 1 1/2 year old classroom's FAVORITE toy out of everything they were given was the bucket full of plastic containers and lids I found around my house! They were OBSESSED with those containers and they loved the power of learning how to "open" and "close" on their own! I LOVE that! I have worked with children in many capacities over the last 20 years. I began as a babysitter at thirteen, then at Read more twenty-one I took my first nanny job with premature twins. Since then, I have nannied for several families, been a camp counselor/program director, foster mom, and preschool teacher in both mainstream and Montessori classrooms. I am in school working on getting my degree in Family and Child Studies. I have always wanted to teach in some capacity, and nannying lets me do that at a one on one level. As for my home life, I have no children, but I have six tailless animals- two Cocker Spaniels, two Boxers, and two clumsy Manx cats. I don't smoke or drink and I follow a vegetarian diet-though I don't expect anyone else to, and I am fine with preparing meat. Although I'm only fluent in English, I know several words of baby sign language, and I will continue to learn, as I find it's a valuable tool to communicate with children. The toddlers I recently worked with got SO excited to learn the signs for the colors and then they were so proud of themselves when they KNEW the sign when I quizzed them! So cute! My philosophy is very similar to the style of Jo Frost from Supernanny. I believe in consistency, follow-through, natural consequences (I do not spank), a lot of positive reinforcement and guidance. As a nanny, I am very hands-on and like to have a weekly theme and daily schedule. I believe it makes the day run more smoothly when the child knows what to expect. Unless expressed otherwise by the parents, I don't watch television with the children, or allow them to roam aimlessly. I believe it's important to have active and outside times mixed in the daily schedule. I would also like to plan fieldtrips to book readings, possible play dates and visits to the Children's Museum, if age-appropriate. I find that exploring the world around them and interacting with other children is a vital part of building a well-rounded child. I know this all sounds super formal but I also balance the learning out with a TON of fun! I love to teach children but I also LOVE to get down on their level and just rough-house and play. I always come prepared with a bag of toys and games that usually has the kids PUSHING mom and dad out the door because they don't get to see what's in the bag until the parents leave :) Just ask if there is anything else you would like to know! Thank you for your time :) TRISH
