My Child Care Work Experience and Insights My first job babysitting was when I was about 12. I started as most sitters do, watching children in my own neighborhood or those in the families I knew through church. My reputation for being a responsible teen sitter provided me with more time caring for children and progressively more responsibilities in homes; light housekeeping and meals, helping with homework. The parents called me, but I like to think their children requested me. When in middle school and early years of high school, I volunteered at my church’s vacation bible school. Volunteering in my community was a school requirement and I found I really continued to enjoy working with children of different ages. Through VBS I had the chance to gain experience with older school aged children leading the activities, games, small group play that was a part of the program. I started Read more to be more confident with challenges and behaviors of that age group and felt a sense of pride knowing that the children in my group liked me because of how I acted with them, how I how I treated them and could sense I enjoyed being with them. My first “real” summer job between junior and senior years of high school were being a teacher’s aide at a preschool summer camp. I loved the age group and their ways. I found their play habits really interesting and their perspective on everything just adorable. Parents got to know me and I had additional requests to sit with children outside of the preschool setting. As adults got to know me better and observe how I worked with children, I was asked to work in the church’s nursery during Sunday mornings for children newborn to three and kept that job throughout my senior year of high school. Between my senior year and the start of college, I applied and was accepted at a theater summer school, first as an assistant and the next year, as a counselor, progressing to office staff and helping to manage problems referred for more care and direction. I found helping to problem solve and guide children to grow and be successful at camp very rewarding. I recently graduated from Texas Christian University as speech language pathology major, psychology minor. I felt I used my education, interests, and skills working with children who are referred for communication difficulties.
