As a counselor for Our Community Cares Camp, I cared for children ages 6-8 leading them in science experiments, music, and singing, art projects such as crafting, writing and performing a puppet play, and going on field trips to nature sites and swimming pools. The camp had the mission towards closing the opportunity gap as well as providing food security for families who usually relied on the school for meals and services so many of my campers were dealing with unstable family situations. As counselors, we were trained in recognizing and properly responding to mental health issues as well as the behavioral issues and coping mechanisms many of our campers were be facing. This situation made me especially conscious of how my role as a summer counselor intersected with mentorship, emotional wellness counselor and educator. In addition to that job, I've led children's book clubs and summer enrichment programs through Read more my role as an assistant librarian. I've been a tutor of refugee children with an Outreach program at my local high school as well as a tutor at King Street Center in Burlington, VT for underprivileged youth. As a high school alumnus, I've worked with my middle school’s theatre department to help them rehearse and put on plays. I've deeply enjoyed the variety of teaching and leadership roles I've had with children, from babysitting infants to tutoring math with refugee students in the city high school. Working with children has me reflecting on the moments in my childhood where mentors had a profound impact on my own growth, whether an art teacher encouraging me to draw or a camp counselor waiting with my on a group hike to look at a strange plant on the side of the trail. Young children have so much potential and an especial affinity for creativity and curiosity which many adults, unfortunately, have lost. As teachers and caregivers, I feel the great responsibility of encouraging confidence in those skills and strengthening them so that children may carry those skills with them into adulthood. It is an exciting and deeply rewarding position to be in.
