My name is Alexandra (Alex) Osborn and I am a graduate of the University of Washington. I majored in English and minored in American Sign Language and plan on attending grad school at UW and getting my master’s in Teaching. I grew up in Puyallup, WA and I am the youngest of four girls. I always wanted a little sibling and I think that is why I ended up enjoying babysitting so much. I started babysitting my neighbor’s children when I was 12 years old. Since that time there has never been a time when I was not giving childcare. I found that I love working with kids so much that I decided to pursue a career in teaching. My two passions working with children and helping others culminated in my choice to just make a career out of what I love. I babysat while in Jr. High and High Read more School for multiple families. In high school I took up American Sign Language to fulfill my language requirement. Right away I found that I had a knack and a love for the language and for deaf culture. I have now taken ASL for over 6 years. After I get my master’s in teaching I plan on someday going back to school in Washington D.C. at Gallaudet to receive my degree and certification in interpreting. Over the three years I have been volunteering and eventually received a paid position at an organization called A.D.W.A.S., the Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services in Seattle, WA. I am still currently receiving volunteer and paid positions when I can, but unfortunately there are not enough hours available for me to support myself. My last two years at the UW I was a Resident Advisor in the residence halls at the University of Washington. This is a live in position where I watched over and cared for a floor of 50 UW students. Through this position I had many trainings dealing with teamwork, conflict resolution, natural disasters, safety and diversity. All other jobs I have had in the past involve the restaurant business. I have worked as both a hostess and a waitress. I am a great care giver because I get joy out of being one. I have made it a point in my life to always work with kids, whether as a job or just for the fun of volunteering.
