My name is Mei Ling, and I am a University of Washington alumna. I am relocating for a new job in the fall (most likely around September) so I am hoping to find a summer-only position starting after 7/15 as that is when my current position will end. I received my BA in Linguistics in 2013, and my MA in Multicultural Bilingual Education in 2015 in Spain. I chose this degree for two main reasons. Firstly, I love children! Secondly, I recognize the importance of teaching children about other languages and cultures in order to prepare them for the increasingly global community of today. I have extensive experience working with children of all ages. Currently I nanny a 20 month old boy. I speak to him only in Spanish and his parents speak to him in English. Now that he is starting to talk he is quickly learning the difference Read more between the two languages! In Spain, I worked as a teacher in a bilingual charter school in Spain, wherein I helped plan and conduct fun conversational activities for students ranging from six to 16 years old. I think learning and playing must go hand in hand, as it is then when a child is able to learn best. Thanks to my experience in Spain, I am very comfortable working with children in both fully immersive or bilingual settings. If you are interested in your child learning either Spanish or Japanese, I would love to help! Before I moved to Spain I nannied for a family with two boys (a 7 and a 9 year-old) for a year and a half. I would take them to and from extracurricular activities such as swimming and soccer. I would also help them with their homework, work on reading with them, prepare healthy meals and snacks for them, play with them outside, plan outings with them, etc. One particular activity that they really loved was creating a lemonade stand. I helped them prepare lemonade and snacks to sell in the neighborhood during the summer. This way I was able to teach them about saving money and how to make a profit. This was a great way to encourage them to be outside instead of staying inside playing video games all day! In addition to those activities, I also helped clean the house, tidy up the boys' rooms, do the laundry, etc. Being a nanny and a teacher have helped cultivate my love for adventure, creativity, and especially my love for children. It is always exciting getting to teach children and having an impact in their lives, especially when I, too, get to learn something from them.
