Meet Shauna

  • Speech Therapist
  • Comfortable with pets
  • Has a car

I have retired from my field in speech and language pathology. I worked primarily with children and have a wealth of knowledge with children aged 2-12. I have worked in daycare settings, Head Start programs, preschool programs, public schools and had a private practice working with children aged two to five years. I also provided services in the home. Through play, I can teach a variety of skills, including vocabulary development, turn-taking skills, problem solving, resolving conflicts, sharing, and so forth. Games teach the above skills, as well as waiting your turn, winning without boasting, losing without anger, following directions and learning the rules of the game. With crafts, I teach vocabulary, following directions, improvement in fine motor development eg. coloring, stringing beads, cutting with scissors, etc. while developing their own creativity. I believe that outside play is crucial to a child's overall development. In group games, they learn to Read more get along with others, show respect for one another, resolving conflicts, learning to win or lose gracefully, Outdoor play enables children to run, jump, engage in group activities or solitary play , engage in pretend play and to improve gross motor skills I especially like to read to children which enriches their vocabulary, allows them to make predictions, respond to questions, ask questions, improves their attention and other skills. I will engage children with activities, while also giving them space to do things they enjoy on their own. I will limit TV time if that is of importance for whom I may be working for. I can do light housekeeping and help in meal preparation. I encourage children to help pick up things and put them where they belong. In essence, I would like to use my skills in early childhood development and be more than just someone in the house to insure their safety, feed them and take care of them.
