My employment history had always consisted of Administrative/Clerical duties in an office environment. In 2013, due to the economy, I was laid off from my job of 17 years. My intentions were to find another job similar to what I had always done because that was what I was good at and comfortable doing. While I was trying to find something suitable, a family friend became ill and was in the hospital for a couple of months. He was a 77 year old gentleman and he did not have family in the area because his children live out of state. When the time came for him to be released from the hospital, it was evident that he was going to need in home care. He had lost alot of weight, was extremely weak, suffered from.short term memory loss and had been diagnosed with dementia. Although I had never done this type of work before, I wasnt having any luck finding employment and this family needed someone to help with him as soon as possible. I reached out to them with the intentions of working short term until they were able to find someone else with whom they would feel comfortable with. I never thought It would make me feel the way I did by helping to take care of him. Watching his health improve a little more everyday and knowing that I played a major part in getting him back to where he needed to be was so gratifying. I can honestly say this may not be the type of job I was looking for but I am grateful I was given the opportunity because one day spent helping someone in need is so much more satisfying than 17 years sitting staring at a computer screen!
