I do not have much experience with companion care but I have a caring heart and I feel that has to be the 1st step.
I have helped my mother after surgery and a family friend on occasion that is blind due to health issues.
Treating the person as equal is important ie: talking to them not down to them encourage and guide them to thinking what you need them to do is what they want to do.
