My mother had a massive heart attack when I was 16 and it changed our lives forever. She didn't know she was having a heart attack so when we arrived at the hospital we were both shocked to learn she was being rushed into emergency bypass surgery. It took months for her to recover and even after that she was never the same. Our family is far from rich so I was her primary care-giver. I was responsible for keeping her clean, managing her medications, administering insulin for a prior diabetes diagnosis, among many other duties. About 10 years later she was diagnosed with dementia, this was a whole new ball game for the both of us. What started as basic hygiene care, turned into a teaching job. She forgot how to do simple things and needed help with everyday tasks. What I found most important was patience. A schedule was our best friend and also allowing her to feel like she was in control of her life. I think a lot of care givers look at their position as just a job. My situation was different of course due to this being my mom but whomever you care for, they are most likely someones mom too. Caring, love, patience, communication, sense of humor. are all important when caring for others.
