I became a caregiver when my Mother In Law was no longer able to live alone. My husband had taken so much time away from work to care for her that he was let go from his job and his brother and wife weren't interested in helping. I didn't care for the way mom was treated by the 'professional' in-home caregivers we hired so with help from her visiting nurse I learned all I could and took over her care for the next seven years.
When I started her care was very basic companion care. As Alzheimer's and renal disease advanced her care grew more complicated and intensive until mom was completely bedridden and ultimately dependent on me until she passed away peacefully in my arms.
