My husband and I rented an apartment in a house some years ago that was owned by a 91 year old woman. After losing her husband she converted her one family home into a one family and a rental so she could raise her sons in the home her husband built. I spent many hours, when I wasn't at work, just sitting and chatting with her and found it was very fulfilling and interesting, not realizing I was a care companion! She needed some company and I enjoyed our chats. Our neighbor was a 93 year old widow and I spent many hours over there as well listening to stories of long ago. These were volunteer as I just visited because I wanted to. After some years in the finance industry I needed a change and became part of a team of care companions. I've worked for friend's parents and grandparents; chatting, preparing snacks or meals, reminding to take medication, working on crossword puzzles and needlepoint, playing cards and watching game shows, whatever makes them happy. It makes me happy too! I'm allergic to dogs but other pets are okay.
