I have had a significant amount of experience teaching children as well as adults, both here in the U.S. as well as in two other countries. Regarding my "care companion" experience, in 2010 and 2011 I spent the last 6 months of a friend's life caring for her as she struggled with advanced pancreatic cancer. I cared for her around the clock and learned/was trained to assist her with many things. I helped organize her medications and when to take them; helped wash her hair, get dressed in the morning, and helped prepare her for bed. I also took her to all of her doctor appointments. Although I do not have any certifications as a "professional" caregiver, I am currently a second year graduate student at BU School of Social Work. Next year, I will be working primarily with adults in an oncology hospital setting. Helping others in a vulnerable time such as these is something that I find joy in doing. It is so nice and comforting to know that someone who is trustworthy and caring is their to support you.
