I've recently had the pleasure of being a care companion to a 93 year old gentleman of Italian decent. We baked cookies, listened to opera, made pasta from scratch, took long rides in the country along the Patapsco River, and worked together with self care in his home. This gentleman reminded me of my grandfather. Even though he was in a nursing home the last three years of his life, I came weekly to check him out, take him riding, shopping for little treats, visit friends he used to hang out with, or family members he wanted to see. My experiences with him taught me how important independence is to the elderly population and I like to help them maintain it as much as possible.
