I am semi-retired and was the director of social services in a nursing home for 13 years. Have also worked as a companion to residents in assisted living both "as needed" for appointments, etc. or for a regular day or half day out for errands and lunch.
I've been the caregiver for two aunts who never had children and lived into their 90's. I feel I have a sense of how to create and respect the comfort level of seniors, understanding the difficulty in changes in living arrangements or even schedules, and that it takes time to develop a trusting relationship. Working exclusively with elders in the nursing home helped me hone in on what is enjoyable, whether it's an activity or a conversation. Being willing and having the time to listen to the old stories and memories is very uplifting for me. Aging can be a lonely process and I'd like to spend my caregiving time with your loved one be a bright spot for both of us.
