I have worked for the Resource Center for Independent Living with an 8-year- old boy who has severe autism. Through therapy (working on fine and gross motor skills, communicating through an alphabet board (where he spelled out what he wanted), learning definitions, practicing spelling, and working on muscle-focused physical therapy, I was able to help him. Because he is nonverbal, it was essential to know how to communicate with him in the proper manner. I was trying to prepare him for school by teaching him vocabulary and reading.
