Bernadette’s Bio
My educational background includes receiving my Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. In addition to a Nursing background, I have also taken several graduate level courses in Education. For approximately ten years, I worked as a Home Tutor in my local public school district. I have experience working with students ranging from grades K-12. Some of the particular cases included students who had difficulty with: drugs/alcohol, medical issues, truancy, vandalism, teen pregnancy and more. Currently, I work with clients who have sustained Traumatic Brain Injury. My focus is to provide guidance as well as foster independence. Depending on the degree of their particular brain injury, I assist them by making an initial functional assessment. After this, I develop a detailed short-term (as well as long-term) goal plan. Next, I implement the goal plan and finally, evaluate it. As often as possible, I not only foster independence, however, I exhibit compassion, patience, sense of humor, understanding, respect for privacy, dignity and more. I'm very passionate about working as a caregiver and recognize the importance of not only working well with the client, however, the need for consistent, effective, meaningful communication with the team (family, medical staff, etc.) It's important for me to treat others the way in which I would like to be treated. I care for my my clients the way in which I would want my loved ones to be cared for. My recent experience also includes caring for a gentleman who experienced a Cerebral Vascular Accident (Stroke). I assist him with activities of daily living while providing meals, ambulation, bathroom needs, etc. Providing home care gives me a tremendous sense of accomplishment and I feel that it is a very rewarding experience.
