About 6 years ago, I recognized a need for additional support for mothers after they were discharged from the hospital. The areas of concern I noted were not just with breastfeeding, but with incision care after a c-section, uncontrolled hypertension in moms, “baby blues”, postpartum depression, infant cord and circumcision care, overfeeding of infants, need of extra help and emotional support, and sleep deprivation for both mom and dad. After receiving my bachelor’s from Chamberlain College of Nursing, I took a position as a Newborn Home Visiting Nurse with the Columbus Health Department. I worked in the Columbus community addressing and trying to improve on these areas of concern. I recognized that the greatest need for moms, a service not provided through the Home Visiting Program, was overnight care. For moms, sleep was interrupted by nighttime feeding, diapering, and repeated awakenings of the newborn infant. As they began adapting to the new demands of motherhood, lack of sleep and fatigue were two commonly expressed concerns. It did not take long for me to realize the difference I could create in the lives of these mothers if I could provide a service that incorporated the benefits of the Newborn Home Visiting Program with overnight care.
