I am currently enrolled at my local community college in a gerontology certificate program. My whole reason for doing so is to become employed as a senior companion. I am trustworthy, responsible, dependable, and personable. I recently wrote a paper on the positive outcomes for giving companionship to seniors. Whether it's in their own home, or assisted living environments, studies have shown an increased life expectancy, and overall better health. To give the gift of oneself, is life-changing! Not just for the person receiving, but for those giving as well. I want to brighten their day, and be someone they look forward to seeing on a regular basis. I find the subject of gerontology very enlightening. As baby boomers move into retirement, our senior population is rapidly expanding. More emphasis is being placed on gerontological education, in order to understand the psychological, sociological, and physical aspects of our aging population. They are a sector that cannot be ignored, not only because it's inhumane, but also because of their vast numbers. I feel I possess the qualities needed to become a senior companion. I am empathetic, patient, understanding, friendly, positive, helpful, a good listener, and smiley. I am looking to become employed on a part-time basis. My plan is to stay in this field for a very long time. Whether someone needs help with home chores, or walks, reading, talking, games, listening, crafts, I want to be the person who can help make their life more enjoyable, and show them they are still very much a part of society, and have a lot to offer. Just being present, can make such a difference. I hope in my old age, I can have someone like that. After all, age is just a chronological number. We should all be so lucky, as to become in need of a senior companion. In my current classes, I am going out into the community acquiring data on a specific scenario relating to seniors with disabilities. My findings have been surprising, enlightening, upsetting, confusing, and comforting. Quite an array of emotions. As a society, we are making a lot of headway toward easing the day to day living of seniors with limited mobility. Science is also making leaps and bounds in relation to extending the human life-span. As you have probably gathered, I love learning new things, and would be more than happy to share my knowledge.
