Diane’s Bio
I became a caregiver out of necessity. I was in my early 20's. At first I hated it, but as time went on with my first person, I began to get many rewards that were unexpected. For example, when I learned how to inject insulin. I was so scared but once I did it, it became a natural thing to do. I took great pride in it. Making my patient feel good, keeping them clean, dressed and fed was a reward. I took care of my Father, who was a stroke patient and diabetic. He was partially paralyzed on his right side. Throughout the 2 years that I cared for him, he continued to have TIA's until eventually he had the major stroke that took his life. During this time, it gave me a chance to really get to know my Dad. We did fun things, silly things and he even taught me things. He couldn't talk, his speech was gone, but he taught me how to change a tire. We laughed and it was a fun experience. He wa so proud when I told my Mom that Dad taught me to change a tire. Mom was happy and so was I. Dad's chest was stuck out a mile from pride of being able to teach me something and couldn't talk or use his right arm. Of course it wasn't all fun. But we made the best of everything.
Next it was my husband whom I cared for. He contracted a rare form of cancer. It took his life in 80 days. He was hospitalized for the entire time and not much care was required of me. However, I bathed him daily, brushed his teeth, changed his gowns and tried to get him to eat. I held a full time job and had a 3 year old as well. This was a devastating blow to me when he passed. I never remarried.
It was many years before the next patient came along. This was my step father who was a diabetic and heart patient. My Mom was still alive and we did this together just like with my Dad. I didn't have as much responsibility as I did with my real Dad, but I relieved her when I could.
Mom was next. First it was breast cancer. I took her to all her doctor appointments and then daily for her 30 day radiation treatments. I cooked her meals, cleaned her house, did her wash, grocery shopping and everything that she needed. She got better and things went back to normal for about 3 months. Then she came down with lung cancer. Again, I cared for all her needs. Finally I sold her home and she moved in with me. I helped her with all her needs, took her places and administered her medicines as necessary.
