I was a born caregiver -- being the oldest of a large family -- I cared for my siblings at a very young age so it comes very naturally for me. Personally, over the years, I have cared for many family members through various stages of loss of independence and sickness. I nursed my mother, mother-in-law and father-in-law through long battles with cancer until their passings. I also took care of my elderly uncle in my home for more than 10 years until his death two years ago. All of these relationships were only enhanced by the time I was able to spend caring for them. Professionally, I have cared for two elderly women and an elderly man over an almost 8 year period. The first woman was in her 80's when she finally passed after being bed bound for almost 5 years. The most recent woman (and her husband) passed away in September 2013 of heart failure after 2.5 years caring for her and her husband. She was 91 (her husband was 89 when he died of end stage Parkinson's disease in June 2012) when she died and an absolute joy to be with. The folks I cared for had various needs -- one being bed bound and on a feeding tube needed constant care, bed bathing, and defense against bed sores. The most recent lady was fairly independent and very strong willed. She was on quite a bit of medication for various illnesses and needed assistance with dressing and personal hygiene but fairly mobile until her recent death. Caretaking does not come readily or easily to everyone. It really is tough work but the most rewarding job I can imagine!
