I was born to care for others. Starting as a young girl, I would often help my grandmother care for the babies she would babysat. When my own aunt had a heart attack and had bypass surgery, she came to stay with us at my mom's Besides my mother, I was the one who set up a schedule for her to take all 20+ of her medications so that she didn't get sick soon after. Helped prepare meals, with daily living activities, made sure she did her breathing/other exercises prescribed to her. Same went with my mother when she had her own bypass surgery 8 years ago, and just recently, last year my mother became very ill and had two hospital stay within a 2 month period. With the help of my brothers and amazing friends, we took shifts in caring for my mother. I have been a care aide for my little cousin who has mental and physical disorders, along with a cousin who had a stroke over two years ago. Her recovery has been amazing and I just encouraged physical activities per her tolerance on outings, whether it was to the Farmer's Market or one of her favorite stores. Plus doctor appointments, rehab therapies and assisted her with daily living activities. But most importantly, we got to just hang out and have fun. Currently, I have finished a course as a Nursing Care Partner at Sentara College of Health Science and am employed with Sentara. It has been a privilege taking care of the patients on my unit and I look forward to continue being a part in their healing and recovery.
