I am patient and nurturing, and I have a quiet, positive demeanor that seems to put people at ease. I got into caregiving after being a stay at home from 2005 to 2008. I worked as a CNA in a nursing home and at a hospital. Then, over the next few years I worked as a residential counselor for adults with mental illness at a treatment home. Finally, I did outpatient community mental health with older adults who had both mental illness and physical health problems.
I took a break from the field to relocate closer to my own aging parents. And now that I've been away, I'm finding I really miss the work.
