Hello, My name is Shakira. I've known from the age of 6 that my career would involve working with children. Throughout my primary and secondary years, I earned pocket change and experience by tutoring, mentoring and working with my peers and younger children in other ways. When I graduated high school, I enrolled in classes at San Jose University. I graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in Child and Adolescent Development and a minor in Business. This is where I learned about social, physical, emotional and mental develop of children from newborn through adolescence. During my last few semesters of college, I worked as a day care teacher at a Montessori school. When I graduated, I was promoted to a teacher's assistant and allowed the director to utilize my versatility, educational philosophy and pedagogy, and working knowledge of child human development. I ended up holding almost every position available, including Read more substitute, assistant, and interim head teacher. I've been a preschool aged daycare teacher, elementary aged day care teacher and finally interim administrator. During my work at the Montessori school I obtained a Child Development Permit. After working for the Montessori school for approximately 4 years, I acted on my love for Montessori education and decided to enroll in a dual Master's degree and Montessori credentialing program at Saint Mary's College of California. When I'm working in the classroom, I am often the last one to leave at the end of the day and actually tend to come in on the weekends, in order to prepare the best environment and activities/lessons/assignments possible for my students. I love working with children because no matter the position, it never feels like a job. In fact, any day I'm not feeling well, stressed out or upset, once I work with children, I forget my "problems" and end up feeling better for the rest of the day. I believe I am so connected to children because I understand them. They are just little people who need all the same treatment, attention, and respect as adults. Once you realize that, it is easier to understand what children need. When I'm not having fun with children, I'm laughing uncontrollably with my family, traveling, cooking, scrapbooking, practicing yoga, running and researching EVERYTHING.
