I have worked and volunteered with the special needs population over the past nine years. During that time, my experience has included ages from three to sixty and up. My school age experience spans a year as a preschool teacher in the University of Kansas’s Kansas Early Autism Program (KEAP) and Little Steps. In addition, I privately shadowed an elementary aged child and provide in-home respite care for another. I also aided in a Moderate/Severe high school class at Trabuco Hills High School for class credit. My adult experience was as direct support staff in a residential setting at Community Living Opportunities in Lawrence, Kansas. The diagnoses I have come into contact with vary, including both Autism Spectrum Disorder and Down’s syndrome. Tasks that have been required of me range from toilet training and behavior management to bed checks and other hygienic care.
