I believe the caregiver gene has always been in my blood- there is nothing I love more! I grew up in Bakersfield, California with two older sisters, as well as a sister 3 years younger than me. My father was a farmer and my mother was a stay-at-home mom. Many of our family friends and relatives had children my younger sister's age, so it was inevitable that I would adopt a caregiver-type role with the younger children. By age 12, I was babysitting at least once a week- interacting with children as young as one years old. From a young age, I began to love responsibility and quickly learned the importance of organization. Six years later, I graduated high school and began to travel. Eventually, I landed in Vermont. In August of 2012, I began a live-in nanny job with the Alsup's: a wonderful family with both parents working full-time Read more and beautiful 5 year-old girl about to start kindergarten (let's call her "A"). During the week, I would guide A through her morning routine: getting her dressed, making breakfast, packing lunch, driving her to school. While she was at school, I attended classes at a local community college. In the afternoons, I would pick A up from school and either take her on an outing or home for homework. I also cooked dinner for the family 3 days a week. I usually had weekends off, but the occasional requested "date night" was happily accommodated. Over the summer, I nannied a second child in addition to A. Now that school was out, we had much more free time. The morning and evening routines stayed the same (because I believe routines are very important with young children), we had daily activities and outings. I loved learning what the girls enjoyed and secretly sneaking in educational fun! Unfortunately, in January of 2014 I moved away to college to study cognitive sciences and communication disorders. During this time, I felt as though something was missing in my life. I cannot wait to make nannying apart of my life again! *I would like to add that I do have experience working with children on the spectrum. I grew up with a sibling with high-functioning autism, so it has always been a part of my life. Now, as a communication sciences/psychology major, I study children on varied levels of the spectrum. My approach (with all children) is compassion and understanding- and as I have said before, I am a big fan of structure.
