Quite simply, my experience as a mother is my best experience. I am blessed to be the mother of a college sophomore at UNC. I have one daughter who I consider my greatest accomplishment. I have a college degree in Special Education-Behavior Modification and have spent the last 6 years working in a PreK-5 shoreline elementary school in Connecticut. The children are the best part of my day, they truly are the reason I have loved my job since returning back to an educational setting when my daughter began high school. I have found the diversity of needs, privilege and environment only strengthens the concept that nature AND nurture are what essentially builds the child. I have also found that it does take a village to maintain that foundation, if you will, and reinforce those building blocks. There has yet to be a day that I have gone without laughing Read more out loud and sometimes crying silently because of the joys my job brings. I am fortunate to be an integral part of these children's everyday lives simply because I matter to them, albeit probably not as much as they do to me. I am CPR certified as well and hold valid SafeSchool Training certificates. I have been an active member of my community for 20 years and have volunteered and coached for the past 12 years. My personality is one that is warm and loving while still being engaging and influential. I have a strong belief that children learn more when they feel connected, whether the lessons are social, emotional or educational. Empathy can be innate, true but it also learned given an environment in which it is modeled. Children are perceptive and should all be given an opportunity to feel safe and loved and happy. I feel that my experience both personally and professionally has allowed me to give that to those who I am fortunate enough to teach.
