I have been babysitting, tutoring, and teaching swimming lessons for five years. I graduated from the University of Montana class of 2014 with a degree in English with an emphasis on Creative Writing. I have been Red Cross certified in lifeguarding, first aid CPR/AED use, and Water Safety Instruction for five years. As a caregiver, I like to focus on learning and fun at the same time, so I try to use more made up games or let the child make cognitive choices, such as what exactly they want to pretend (one of my previous kids decided to be a purple polka dotted elephant fighting giant robots). I don't believe in teaching what to think, but rather how to think. I want them to color, think, create, explore...they don't even realize they're learning! For example, sometimes no matter how much Johnny wants to play dinosaurs on the moon, he's got to finish his homework. Every child is different, and exploring their individual personalities is one of the greatest joys of working with children. For some, it might take some of the "water on a stone" method; slowly reaching out until they're comfortable. For others, it's the "two feet first" method; jump right in! Teaching swimming has taught me well how to teach practically every thing else. It takes lots and lots of practice to get good, however, everyone has to go through that first (and sometimes scary) dunk.
