I grew up in a large, tight-knit, Hawaiian family. I'm the oldest of four and the oldest grandchild of twenty-three. (There's just a bit of us) Being the oldest I have always been the one to watch and look out for all the kids. Living in Hawai'i is quite the struggle for a big family if your parents don't have a great amount of money. So as the oldest child, I had to step into that role at a young age because both of my parents were working. However, my parents were also present for many things in our lives, and they did an amazing job at stewarding their jobs in such a way that they had plenty of time to enroll us in sports and extra-curricular activities as well just be present for every game, recital, open house. I say this because my mom really nurtured a loving "mothering" Read more characteristic in me that has helped me a lot in my life. Especially with babysitting opportunities. As I got into high school, I would babysit for neighbors and extended family members and always had the best time. I think I would actually say that babysitting has really initiated my love of education and drive to become a teacher. Also, while I was in high school I worked at a summer program where I lead grades two, three, four, five, and seventh every day for six weeks. This led me to gain first aid certification as well as sitting experience with various age groups. After high school, I didn't get many babysitting opportunities when I moved away from Hawai'i for a bit. However, I did volunteer for different care ministries where I got to babysit ages 1-5 as well as elementary kids for a few hours twice a week.
