Hi there! My name is Courtney O'Brien and I'm 25 years old from Evergreen Park. I am the middle child of 7 children and I grew up playing various sports; Basketball was #1 playing from 5th grade to freshman year of college! Babysitting was my first job at the age of 15. I looked after 2 young boys in my neighborhood before school hours, from 6 a.m. until 8 a.m. My duties included waking them up, making them breakfast(cereal) and taking them to school. I held this position until i was 17 and the mother no longer needed assistance in the mornings. While being in high school I enrolled in a class that allowed me to work 1:1 with AERO students at Evergreen Park Community High School. I enrolled in this class my Junior and Senior year and gained much experience even though this wasn't a job! From there I Read more was able to apply to the Evergreen Park School District to become a 1:1 aid to a non-verbal 9 y.o girl before and after school hours. The student had a computer to translate what she needed, but we were able to communicate very well without use of the computer. My duties for that position included managing/distribution of snacks to student, helping with homework, assist during play time to ensure safety, assist to the bathroom(changed diaper if needed) and helped student on/off school bus everyday. This position also included looking after the other students enrolled in before/after care program; assisting those students (K-6th) also with their homework, manage games and snack time. I left this position to become a caregiver where I would hold that position for 4 years! I took care of a 54 y.o woman who suffered a stroke in 2010 and also sufferes from aphasia, rheumatoid arthritis, COPD and mobility issues. My duties as a caregiver included personal hygiene care, medical transportation, meal prep, pet care, house cleaning, managing/distribution of medicine, care in/out of home(including hospitalization) and much more! Patient had difficulty communicating due to aphasia but speech improved w/ time. I had to leave this position due to a seizure/not able to provide necessary transportation. I then became a 1:1 Aid again for the Evergreen Park School District! During the morning, I assisted an 11 y.o boy who suffers from ADHD & violent outbursts. Duties included ensuring student was behaving/playing appropriately, assist with school work and walking student to his locker. In the afternoon i looked after the other students(K-5th) assisting with hw, snacks and games!
