My first child care experience was staying with my nephew after school at eleven. At 13 I was watching my baby sister. Through my brother (my nephew's dad) I got other babysitting opportunities with children from a few months  to 7 years old. I became a nanny to a friend's children after having my daughter and we participated in all the local story times, kids day at the local malls and visited local  and surrounding area parks with the local mom's club. We attended craft days at the recreation center and learned about nature at the nature preserve. On days we had no plans we made play-dough or cookies. We also read a lot. My daughter is still an avid reader and has many of those first books stashed away to read to her own children. Most recently I was a foster parent in Virginia Beach for 3 years. Initially Read more I did respite care for other foster parents, but converted to full time care when a teenaged girl needed placement in our area. Teens can be difficult to place for foster care and adoption. That child was reunited with a blood relative after eight months with us. We are still in contact with her and the child placed with us just before her. You may not be able to hang on to children, but they should be able to know that they can always reach out to you.
