Caring for children is one of my great joys! I appreciate each child has different ways of thinking, learning, and engaging the world. As the eldest child and grandchild, I have always loved playing with children. Parents in my neighborhood convinced my mom and dad to let me start babysitting when I was 12. From those first babysitting jobs, to being a mother's helper, teaching in day care centers and pre-schools, and specialized instruction in reading and writing, my time with children has always been an essential part of my life. As lead teacher in a toddler classroom, I developed a curriculum emphasizing creativity, reading readiness, collaborative play, the natural world, and cultural and family diversity. I believe that almost anything can be made into an adventure! I love being outside and exploring nature. I have an ever-growing collection of art projects for different seasons and all ages. I am Read more a mixed media artist and documentary filmmaker, and I'm always finding fun art supplies from surprising places (The Scrap Exchange in Durham is a favorite.) I like to provide a basic structure and materials and then encourage children to explore their own ideas. We'll have many opportunities to color outside the lines! I'm a lifelong reader and delight in sharing my favorite children's and young adult books. Reading out loud is one of my absolutely favorite activities. In my experience, drawing a child's attention to his or her positive choices is a great way to encourage appropriate behavior. I embrace healthy structure, clear boundaries, and consistent expectations. I enjoy high-energy kids and I have been successful helping children who struggle with behavior issues. I care about developing the whole child: mental, physical, and emotional. I possess great communication skills and value collaborative relationships with parents. I take my responsibility for your children's safety very seriously. It's important to me that you know your children are with someone who truly loves their company and looks forward to being with them each day. You will find me to be a warm and enthusiastic presence in your child's life!
