I was ten when I read the Hobbit. I hid it inside my school books and read it through class thinking I was fooling my teachers. I went on a journey to a different world with magical creatures for the first time as only a child can. I knew that one day I wanted to write stories that would be that fun to read. Being a nanny keeps that dream alive. When I was fifteen I went to every store in the mall applying for jobs, but I looked too young, so I babysat instead. I danced, built forts, played sports, told stories and had fun with some great kids. Since then I have worked on film sets, in management, and as a personal assistant. Nothing is as inspiring as witnessing the wonderment that a child feels as he or she discovers something new. Most of all what I take Read more with me after twenty years of being a nanny is a connection to some of the most amazing families that will stay with me forever. Max was three when I met him. His sister Eliza was a baby and his daddy was dying of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Max had Sensory Integration Disorder. The world was overwhelming to him. I watched his mother Lisa bury her thirty-three year old husband and remain completely patient with Max through it all. She taught me that you had to leave all of your troubles at the door and approach Max from a place of peace. When you did he was the sweetest and most loving kid I have ever seen. The last time I saw him he was taller than me. He gave me a giant hug, sat next to me, and put his head on my shoulder. Not the reception you get from most teenage boys. Max and his family will always be very important to me. Alexa was seven when I met her. She has a quick-witted hysterical response to everything. She does it her own way like a modern day Pippi Longstocking. I call her the GPS because of her uncanny since of direction. There were times that she purposely got me lost so that she did not have to go home. I had many fun times with Alexa. She still sends me funny texts and videos. I miss her very much. Max, Eliza, Alexa, Rowen, Vivi and many more are the reason why I am still a nanny. I wouldn't trade my experiences with them for anything. I am not looking for a job. I am looking for the next family that will be my friends forever. I do not have a magic bag like Mary Poppins but I do know how to make everything into an adventure and how to tell a magical story. Resume and letters of reference available upon request. Sincerely, Rachel H. Palmer
