I had the honor of looking after a little boy in Brooklyn when I first moved to New York almost three years ago. When it was time for him to start school, I was heart broken, but I found another family who I have been with for a little over a year now. I am equally in love with the twins who just turned 3, but I feel like its time to move on. Ideally I would like to find a family in closer proximity with great vibes. After working as a language instructor to adults, I realized I truly enjoy working with children. As soon as I was old enough, I took a babysitting course at a hospital that included CPR and safety training. I was a Creative Writing and Theater Major, and enjoy cooking, singing, getting playful, creative, and crafty, and planning city adventures that stimulate and inspire, Read more and keeping the home environment a comfortable safe space. I have learned many things from each family and each child I've played with. At my current job especially, I've gone to some RIE child seminars with the mother and sometimes the other nannies. I've read many child psychology books that really have changed the way I interact with children and adults. The focus being how to respect children, their space and agency, and how to help them identify and cope with their emotions. For example if a child is hurt and crying, instead of saying "It's ok", or "You're ok" narrating what you observe "You fell down, I wonder if you bumped your knee. I bet it hurts, you're crying. I'm here if you need me." Anyway, I could go on, but I am grateful to have learned how to communicate with more emotional intelligence. I have worked for families through their various stages of growing. This last year or so has really been magical, being with twins who, when I met them were 21 months and now are three. Its a wonderful time. What I get out of working with children is great inspiration, renewed creativity and open mindedness. They keep me in touch with the wonder and mystery of existence and remind me to live in the moment and learn something new each day. Though I have cared for children of various ages, I would prefer to work with babies; (0-3).
