"And the tree was happy." Is a quote in The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. The poem exemplifies how an ideal caregiver should be everything and anything a child needs them to be. I was 16 when I first began sitting for a beautiful blue-eyed toddler and his savvy 5-year-old sister. Date nights soon became the highlight of my weeks, as I continued to be captured by these two little angels. Time flew by, and before I knew it I had been babysitting for this family for over a year. Around this time, an unfortunate separation between the parents occurred. However, this was none of my concern and I simply knew I had to be there for the children. I continued to work for their father and two years later, I was introduced to a new mother and three more children. Now the residence was truly a full house -five Read more kids! As I was entering college, I began to work during school breaks only, but I never lost touch with the children. Some mornings, I would awake to the sound of the Face-Time ring and an adorable, freckled boy on the screen. These calls helped patch up for lost time and kept me updated on all the 2nd grade gossip. When Summer arrived - I went into full Nanny mode. This included: taking the children to and from camps, preparing their meals, doing daily outdoor activities, scheduling play dates, helping with summer reading, laundry, light cleaning around the house, and even assisting the family on long vacations. When the Fall entered, I would leave the kids behind with warm hugs, my mailing address, and a hopeful,"see you all again in December!" I continued to do this for four years. After graduating from college last May, I decided I needed to explore other career paths. Since then, I have worked for the family a few times on random occasions but maintain a strong and individual relationship with each of the five children. To me these children aren't just "an experience," they are a part of my life. I have watched them grow for many years and have seen them begin to become there own person. Being a caregiver, or a nanny, has no monetary value -it is completely self rewarding.
