I discovered my love for working with individuals with special needs during my last two years of high school, when I worked with a 5-year-old boy with autism. He was very low-functioning and I enjoyed the challenge of getting inside of his world and teaching him through play. I had two undergraduate practicums that were specific to working with students receiving Special Education services in the public school setting. My first experience was tutoring a boy in junior high with ADD and an emotional disability. I tutored him twice a week to help improve his attitude toward school and also help raise his reading level and increase his organizational skills. I also had the opportunity to teach in an elementary resource room. I taught reading and math to small groups of students, all of which had Individual Education Plans (IEP's). Most of these students were cognitively delayed. In 2013, I Read more spent the summer in Rochester providing respite for families with children with special needs. I prepared meals, accompanied children to therapy sessions or other activities in the community, and enjoyed engaging in play and positive interactions with each child. I recently completed my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and Special Education at Ball State University. During my last semester I student taught in a 4th grade classroom. I worked with a group of students that had very unique needs. My passion is working with students of all ability levels because I want to show them that I love them, I care about them as an individual, and I want to help them be their absolute best. I am permanently relocating to Rochester, New York at the end of December 2014, and I would love to become a close part of a loving family who is looking for devoted, wholesome care for their family.
