Hi! I'm Sarah. I started babysitting when I was 11 And have done it to some degree ever since. Through high school, college and other jobs part time and also as a full time nanny for 18 months. I've also worked at several day cares and preschools, most recently the Jowonio School in Syracuse, which is an inclusive preschool for kids with developmental disabilities. In addition to working with children I've also been employed as a public health educator, a community garden facilitator/nutrition educator and as an advocate for victims of sexual assault/rape crisis counselor. I love working and being with children. I'm very focused on getting outside, going for adventures (however small they might be), and experimentation. I take my cues form the children I sit for, and their particular needs. I feel comfortable sitting for children of all ages and ability levels (I've worked with children with developmental Read more disabilities, and grew up with a younger brother with autism). It's important to me to find a family that is a good match; I care a lot about my friendships with both children and parents. I'm generally of the philosophy that kids will eat when they get hungry, sleep when they get tired and that most of the time gentle reassurance, reasoning and allowing kids to make choices, however small the choices might be (blue spoon or green spoon?) is the key to success. I think kids are most comfortable when they understand what the limits are so that they are not constantly trying to figure out what is and isn't ok. That being said, I sometimes find myself attempting to reason with two year olds, realize that my efforts are ridiculous and futile, and end up informing them "I'm sorry you feel that way, but it's a time to take nap now". I've recently returned to Syracuse after thru hiking the Appalachian Trail. I'm in the process of applying to graduate school for environmental interpretation. Oh, and I'm an EMT!
