I am a hard-working and self-motivated individual. My confidence has improved from working with troubled youth at Hillside Children's Center. I have been able to foster trusting relationships with children that struggle with developing last bonds, all while remaining trauma informed. It is a powerful accomplishment when I can accompany a youth to reach new goals in their treatment. Specifically, I have been able to positively improve a client’s school attendance with my individual support each morning, assisting them in completing morning routine and feeling confident about beginning their day. In 2014 I completed my Bachelor’s in psychology from St. Bonaventure University with a focus in adolescent studies. I grew an interest in maladaptive behaviors and interpersonal relationships. For my senior capstone I examined whether distance from home and family marital status affected student well-being. Before coming to Hillside I began volunteer work with children at the Children’s Country Day Read more School. I was able to see positive growth when working with ten toddlers over several weeks. By incorporating nature-based activities I was able to build trusting relationships with the children; specifically through fostering healthy eating habits when growing their own fruits and vegetables. These skills have helped me when teaching youth from Hillside healthy eating behaviors. I have also developed new skills for interacting with diverse families at my position for the Alternatives for Battered Women. Often, the survivors that enter our temporary shelter come from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Even though there are many barriers to overcome when working with clients, I continue to take time to understand their past and help them to build safety plans for a successful future.
