While most of my high school friends were getting their first jobs at McDonalds or a clothing store in the mall, I had a blossoming baby-sitting business from the time that I was 11 when a neighbor hired me as a mother's helper. By the time I had graduated from high school, I had spent two summers caring for my cousin's son and daughter full time. I took them to the library and to swimming lessons, to the parks for play and picnics, out for an ice-cream treat on hot and humid summer days. We had so much fun. I knew that I wanted to spend my life working with children, and I set out for Syracuse University where I had a dual major in Child and Family Studies/Early Childhood Education. I took many courses in child psychology, child development, nutrition, art with children, etc. In my sophomore year I Read more student-taught as an assistant in the SU Nursery School and then in the Campus Day Care Center. Sadly, a temporary health condition forced me to transfer to Utica College so I could study from home, and I made the huge mistake of changing my major to Accounting. I worked as an accountant for 4 years, but discovered that I was much more comfortable in the sandbox with children than I was in the corporate world. When my first child was born, there was no question that I would become a full-time mom, and I was so fortunate that my husband's career allowed us to swing that. I was off and running, never so happy in my life as when my son was in my arms. When I thought my heart could never love any more, my second son was born and I relished the role of nurturing the development of my infant and toddler. I read to my sons from the day they were born, sang silly songs for every occasion, we played with blocks and balls and old-fashioned toys; nothing better than a kitchen pot and a plastic mixing spoon to entertain a toddler! We washed the cars together, taught them how to help with the laundry by throwing wet socks into the dryer for me, we baked things, we went for slow and dawdling walks, an infant and a toddler can keep you busy! So three more years down the line, my baby Patrick came along, and it was my three sons! My family laughed at me because I'm a girly-girl, and used to say when I was 5 that I was going to have twin girls when I grew up! My boys are launched (one a senior in college, and two getting their PhDs) and I am lonely for little ones in my life again. Your precious children will be in loving and experienced hands with me!
