Meet Carrie

  • Comfortable with pets

I was the eldest child at all family gatherings, and even among my parents' friends' children, so I got used to being around little ones quite early in life. At first, I just wanted to be left alone so I could entertain myself or read a book, but one day I started reading the Babysitter's Club series and suddenly I decided being a babysitter was the height of being cool. I begged my parents to let me babysit their friends' kids, so at 12 years old I got started by watching our neighbor's toddler while the adults were just one house over playing cards. Since then, I have had the pleasure of helping numerous families in shaping their children's lives. From babysitting to summer camps, assisting in day care programs after school, nannying for individual families, to classroom teaching and creating curriculum, I have worked with all ages of children Read more from infancy through high school graduation. I have a very ordered way of thinking which lends itself to detail orientation and event planning in a way that enables me to simultaneously track multiple children's schedules at once; but I am also laid back enough to be flexible with changing plans and unexpected hiccups. I feel very strongly that communication is the root of success oriented children, and that an open line of communication must be maintained between all parties such that the parent and the caregiver have absolute trust, in addition to the child feeling comfortable to be open and honest with the caregiver and their own parents. I love learning, so I love working with kids because they're in the process of becoming who they will be and every day is a new lesson. As a classroom instructor for grades 7-12, I taught public speaking and debate, and I am well versed in encouraging curiosity and nurturing independence and confidence in young people. I am currently pursuing my Master's in Early Childhood Education and Special Education at Hunter College. I firmly believe in learning through play, so I enjoy cards and board games with children as much as making up our own make-believe fantasies. One of my favorite games for ages 2-5 is Jenga, because it helps develop fine motor skills in addition to teaching children about cause and effect. I have a passion for cooking, and enjoy finding new and creative ways to encourage nutritious eating habits. I am not a vegetarian myself, but I live in a vegetarian household and have experience handling diet specifications as well as allergy restrictions.
