Hello! My name is Annie. I currently live on Spring Garden near Center City and spend my time performing at the Philly Improv Theater, writing poetry and sketch comedy, and brewing my own kombucha. I practice yoga and meditation and try to make it to Kelly Drive at least once a week. In May 2013 I graduated Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY with a BFA in Creative Writing with a focus in poetry and performance. Following graduation I worked at the University of Virginia (UVA) Young Writer’s Workshop as a residential counselor and scriptwriting and poetry instructor for the past two summers. From August 2013 to June 2014 I participated as a volunteer in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps program traveling with a team of 10 individuals doing community service projects across the U.S. Since I am the youngest of three kids I have always felt an intense need and desire Read more to have a younger sibling. Once I got older and realized that my parents had no visions of future babies for me to play with, I began babysitting and nannying (children ages newborn to tween) along with teaching swim lessons and coaching youth field hockey. Whenever I work with a child in any of these capacities, I seek to find out what it is specifically that that child needs in order to be their best self. I believe that in order to gain this knowledge from a child, one must first create a safe space in which the child feels heard and validated. During my time in New York while studying poetry, I also studied improvisational theatre and was a performer and a roustabout for a circus – both performance methods that I like to incorporate into my writing and daily life. I believe these methods set up safe spaces through letting go, being present, and actively listening to others. When I take care of kids I try to incorporate physical activities, playing outside and nature walks, along with an artistic engagement and reflection of the world, such as writing a poem or a play, or making arts and crafts. A strong desire I have for myself is to be actively engaged every day of my life and a I cannot think of a better way to be engaged than by spending quality time each day taking care of and hanging out with kids. I also currently substitute teach at the Germantown Friends School and the West Philly Cooperative School.
