Sittercity, in defiance of all reason, decided to reject my background check badge for the sole fact that I have a failure to yield traffic violation from more than 8 years ago, which came up on my criminal report (despite being a minor traffic violation) and not my driving record. Anyway, that's the sole reason that I'm ineligible for the clear background check badge. I'm completely willing to prove this to anyone who's interested in seeing it. I'm not the slightest bit embarrassed about the charge, considering both its age and its utter lack of severity; however, I'm more than a little frustrated that my badge is unattainable for what is arguably one of the most benign misdemeanor charges imaginable from nearly a decade ago. Currently, I'm in the process of having this appropriately reclassified as a traffic violation, but this is a difficult process as I no longer live Read more in Missouri. I started teaching and caring for children as a teenager at a state-licensed daycare facility in rural Missouri. I provided mentorship and supervision for preschool and grade-school age children. In that capacity, I met children of all types and temperaments, many of whom were from broken homes which lacked a male role-model. I've taught and supervised children with various conduct disorders, physical disabilities, disfigurements, and special emotional needs. Indeed, my own experience with physical disability/disfigurement gives me a perspective that similarly affected children trust and appreciate in addition to a level of empathy that would otherwise be difficult to obtain. After obtaining my bachelor's degree in biology, I started my current position at the University of Pittsburgh as a teacher's assistant. As a TA, I've taught several semesters of biochemistry as well as a semester of a developmental biology lab to undergraduates. This position has not only given me invaluable experience teaching and interacting with young adults, but a far deeper understanding of nutrition, health, and biological development of children to supplement the experience I gained as a caregiver in their social and mental development. It is important to me that I stress this fact: I have no degree or certification in childhood care or development; instead, I offer several years of experience in these fields as well as teaching and mentoring both children and young adults.
