I have worked with special needs children for the past 32years. My last position was at Fort Sam Houston Elementary in TX. I worked as a Special Education Para-educator in a PPCD classroom working with children ages 3-6 yrs. old. These children qualify for a classroom setting because they may have developmental delays or are classified as being on the autism spectrum. I was responsible for following the student’s current IEP / BIP goals. I also assist classroom teachers in an inclusion setting. My first year at Fort Sam I had the pleasure of working with a 2nd grade student 1:1 who had medical, emotional, and cognitive challenges. I was responsible for supporting him in a co-teach classroom with assisted technology making sure we were meeting his IEP/BIP goals. While employed with the San Marcos School District I was assigned the position of ISS Instructional Assistant/Focus Support at Bowie Elementary Read more School. I was responsible for creating a behavior management system that would work with the current school wide behavior program. (TRRFCC Student and 4 C programs). Students grades K- 5 were seen on a daily basis for behavior support and social skill instruction. During my 26 years with the Greenfield School District I have had the opportunity to work in all the Primary and Secondary Schools. I started out my career at the High School working with all special needs students in a Designated Vocational Instructional Program (DVI). We provided new curriculum and “hands on “support in all vocational classes so the students with individual disabilities could have an opportunity to succeed. These classes included SHOP: Home Maintenance, Welding, and Electronics. HOME EC: Sewing, Child Development, and Cooking. Eventually, these students would make their way out in the community and job shadow with support. Throughout the years with the School District I continued providing support where the need was the greatest. I worked in the Elementary EC-5/ Middle Schools working with students that have various learning, physical, emotional Challenges. Including students on the Autism spectrum. Child – Centered- I believe that working in the field of Education, “the children”, no matter what age, need to always be placed first. We always need to be asking ourselves what is in the best interest of the child/student.
