My training in child-care started at a young age - baby sitting in high school and college, usually for elementary aged children. In addition to childcare responsibilites, I would also help with homework, laundry, dishes and meal preparation. During the summers we would spend a lot of time at the pool, riding bikes and playing outside in the mornings. I have one child, a son who was diagnosed at a young age with special needs. He has been the joy of my life. We have overcome many challenges together as a family and he has taught my husband and I patience, kindness and acceptance. It has been a learning process every step of the way. I had a tremendous amount of help from speech therapists, occupational therapists and wonderful teachers. Together we formulated plans for him and worked together to help him become the success he is today. One of Read more our favorite things to do together as he was growing up was reading books and he is still an avid reader today. My son is now 21 years old, attends Austin Community College, works part-time and has achieved much more than his Dad and I ever thought possible. While my son was in high school I worked as a full-time nanny, taking care of a 3 month old in my home until she was 18 months old. It was a bright light in my day having her here to play, read books, watch her face as she discovered new things, tried new foods and reaching her milestones, not only learning to say words and build her vocabulary, but to use the words correctly. Nurturing someone else's child helped me to feel a wonderful sense of purpose. About a year later I had a friend in dire need of childcare. She and her husband had adopted 3 children - 12, 11 and 1 and also had a brand new baby. I volunteered to take care of her two youngest children in her home 1-2 times a week, four hours at a time, every week for 18 months. The children and I had so much fun together-playing in the backyard, making food in the play kitchen, reading books, going to the park, trips to the Thinkery, and taking long walks. I am previously trained in CPR, first aid and water safety courses and in the process of updating my certifications.
