Hello my name is Keith. I'm a philanthropic type of person who has a passion for serving those in need of care. My grandmother instilled this principle in me as I witnessed her take in many foster children with traumatic past and mental/behavioral problems. She never treated them different from others and always was conscious of interacting with the children, with dignity in mind. By being raised with that motto displayed throughout my childhood, no wander, I have an affinity for assisting special needs children, adolescents, and teens. I fist started officially babysitting when I was 16 for my beautiful niece, when she was around 3 or 4, for my sister and her husband. I took care of her on date nights, and whenever my sister was on call for her job. I cherished that precious time spent with my niece at such a young age, and the lessons she Read more taught me in patience, not getting flustered, paying close attention to non verbal cues, being flexible, and opening up to become the caring nurturing care giver she needed at the time. From there I went on to assist my sister with her in-home day care business. She keeps children from 2-10, where she lives. When I would come to visit, she would put me to work, which I didn't mind, and I would assist her with the children. I did this from 16-22, until I started working for ChildHelp, which is a group home that as a child care counselor, I was responsible for the direct supervision of 4 adolescent boys, with add, adhd, autism, Asperger's, sociopathological, psychopathological issues. It was a defining moment in my life and the field of work, I chose. I was exposed to behaviors and personalities that I had never interacted with, but in order to be successful, I had to quickly adjust, which I did. I learned excellent techniques to calmed down an escalated client, tune into their feelings, understanding their emotional sensitivity, as well as how sensitive to moods of yourself and others, and how that can have an affect on them. I learned that an engaged child is generally a happy child and makes for a non confrontational day, and in order to this, you must engage the child in conversation, of their choice and interest, as well as play, reading, and educational games and TV, that keeps their attention. I love working with special needs children and the candor, and how unpredictable they can be, and there's never a dull moment, so to speak. I've been working with adolescents and special needs since 2007.
