I've always been a caregiver all my life: Growing up I was the neighborhood babysitter, on the weekends I would be hired to help clean houses, and I am the oldest of four. People tell me a lot that I have a lot of energy, my love for children shows, and that I have a gift for my field. I am 39 years old, single, and no kids. So I am mature and still have a lot of liveliness, and exuberance which I attribute to my loving; positive attitude. As mentioned in my title, I hold a B.A. from Old Dominion University in Communication Disorders with a minor in Special Education. My experience was very enriching. Some of the many courses I took and things I learned - * Behavioral Management Techniques for Students with Diverse Need -- In this course I learned (a) terminology and concepts of applied behavior Read more analysis (b) knowledge of strategies for increasing appropriate social behavior and decreasing undesired social behavior, (c) skills in observation of student behavior and evaluation of behavior change, (d) techniques to promote maintenance and generalization of behavior * Human Growth and Development -- In this course I learned of human growth and development across the life span with emphasis upon normal growth and milestones achieved in the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional systems. *Augmentative and Alternative Communication Methods and Materials-- I learned how to help children with special needs gain access to communication. * Also; a list of Speech, Language, and Hearing courses. Awards/ Honors: 3X Deans List recipient, Certificate of Leadership Student Involvement: Vice President of St. Council for Exceptional Children Before I started on my path of higher learning, I was a home care provider for the Dept. of Social Services of VA. I was responsible for the home's day-to-day operations, provided nutritious meals set by USDA standards, and met safety regulations to ensure a safe environment. I maintained general record keeping that any childcare would require. Overall, I had to maintain standards set forth by VA SS for licensure. My long-term goal is to enroll in an online masters program to become a BCBA Behavioral Analysis. I have a natural knack for finding learning opportunities in children’s natural environment; through play and everyday activities. My mission statement is quite simple, “ I am the fire that sparks young minds. I believe through a child I can truly change the world and make a difference.”
