Hi, I am Rachel DeVore from Haymarket, Virginia! I am currently 20 years old and am completing my sophomore year at Florida State University as an international affairs major. This summer, I will be returning home to Northern Virginia (in which I have lived for the past ten years) and hope to obtain a position as a nanny. I first discovered my love for working with children when I was thirteen and began babysitting for families in and around my neighborhood. For the next seven years, I cared for children from various families ranging in age from 2-13 years old. The summer of my junior year of high school, I also served as a nanny for several weeks for a family with three children whose parents both worked full-time. By far, my favorite part of providing childcare is being able to forge a unique connection with each individual child. Given Read more that children often mirror the behavior of the adults in their lives, I believe that a nanny has an important role in not only caring for a child(ren) but also serving as a mentor and setting a positive example. In addition to my childcare experience, I also worked as a year-round swim coach for children ages 3-18 during my final three years of high school. I was responsible for monitoring swimmers, carrying out practice plans, developing stroke technique, and creating a safe and fun atmosphere for the children. I was also able to combine my love for children and music (I participated in chorus all four years of high school and will be taking a chorus class at FSU next semester) by providing guitar lessons for one of my pre-teen swimmers. In addition to the experience that I have obtained in high school, I have been fortunate to explore new opportunities at Florida State. I participated in FSU's First Year Abroad Program, spending my freshman year of college living in Central London. I was recently selected to serve as a Student Ambassador for the First Year Abroad Program beginning in fall 2015. I hope that this synopsis provides a brief overview of my experience and conveys my sincere interest in caring for children.
