I have spent the last decade working with kids of all ages, and in many different settings. My history with childcare is framed by experiences instructing school-age children in academic fields with an emphasis on critical thinking; including caring for and encouraging infants as well as high schoolers. I was an elementary school tutor for four years in the Shoreline school district teaching reading and math, and was recently part of the University of Washington's Philosophy for Children program in the Seattle school district. Most recently I have been enjoying the role of "household manager," which consists of caring for children, facilitating outdoor activities (I believe strongly in the importance of fresh air), monitoring and limiting screen time, mentoring and providing a stable and available presence, keeping the family's schedule, meal planning, household shopping, cooking, and housekeeping tasks like tidying and more professional cleaning. I think children's natural curiosity and Read more wonderment is very valuable to development and learning, but sadly becoming more and more of a 'stage' that they pass through and quickly leave behind. It's something that I have tried to hold onto myself, and something that I feel everybody needs a bigger dose of. The best way, I think, of achieving this is engaging with children and experiencing the world on their level. Their wonder makes children natural scholars, but they often lack opportunities to exercise this ability and thus, it fades away. For this reason, qualities of open-mindedness and willingness to engage in seemingly silly or futile conversations are something that I try my best to apply to my interactions with children. In my opinion, being conscious of how I am communicating with children in their eyes makes a meaningful difference in childcare. I'm currently working on writing children's books, poems, autobiographical short stories, and improving on my art and illustration skills which are focused to accompany my own words. On my free days, I travel to the Skagit Valley and do work like clearing brush and chopping wood on a site where I am building a log and slate cabin. I also love my weekly lunch date with my friends Jan, 75, and Donna, 98, at an assisted living facility in my neighborhood. Right now, I'm open to any babysitting or caretaking arrangement and would especially like to help people make personal time for themselves or set aside time to spend with their spouse.

Emme watched my two-year-old daughter a few weeks ago and the experience was very good - she's thoughtful, creative, and patient. My daughter had a great time with Emme - from what I understand, they read books, painted and did imaginary play together. The cherry on top: she arrived early to both our introductory meeting and on the morning she came to babysit and made sure all the toys and art supplies had been put away when I returned. I highly recommend Emme as a sitter.
